What is Colic?

Colic is a common condition in newborns that can cause excessive crying and fussiness. It is characterized by episodes of crying that last for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for at least three weeks. The exact cause of colic is unknown, but it is thought to be related to a combination of factors such as gastrointestinal issues, over-stimulation, or a sensitive temperament.

Symptoms of colic include crying that is difficult to soothe, drawing up of the legs, and a distended stomach.

To help manage colic, there are several things you can try:

  • Try different types of soothing techniques, such as rocking, swaying, or gentle bouncing.

  • Try using a baby carrier or wrap to keep your baby close to you and provide a sense of security.

  • Try different positions for feeding, such as holding your baby in a more upright position.

  • Try white noise or soft music to create a calming environment.

  • Consult with your pediatrician to rule out any underlying health issues or food allergies that could be causing colic.

Remember, colic is a common condition and will eventually resolve on its own. In the meantime, be patient and compassionate with your baby and remember to take care of yourself as well.
